Most drivers notice their muffler is bad when it gets noisier than usual, as a loud muffler is a sign of exhaust system issues. Exhaust systems collect and release toxic gases from the cylinders resulting from internal combustion. The muffler then releases the gases into the air. If you notice the 'check engine' icon is continuously displayed, strange odors, or a noisy muffler, then the muffler might be compromised. A muffler can go bad due to various factors, including:
- Rust and Corrosion: Exposure to moisture, road salt, and harsh weather conditions can lead to rust, especially in the exhaust system. Over time, this rust weakens the metal and causes holes or cracks in the muffler.
- Physical Damage: Hitting debris, curbs, or potholes can physically damage the muffler. This might lead to dents or cracks, which can affect its performance.
- Condensation: When the exhaust system cools down, moisture can accumulate inside the muffler. If this moisture doesn’t evaporate, it can lead to rust and internal corrosion.
- Exhaust Leaks: If other components of the exhaust system are compromised, they can cause excess pressure or leaks that damage the muffler over time.
- Age/Wear and Tear: Over time, the muffler naturally deteriorates from the heat, gases, and physical vibrations it endures during standard use.
- Engine or Exhaust System Problems: Issues with the engine, such as misfiring, can send excess unburned fuel into the exhaust, damaging the muffler and exhaust parts.
