What does a car tune up consist of?

A car tune-up is a routine maintenance procedure aimed at ensuring your vehicle runs smoothly and efficiently. While the specifics can vary depending on the vehicle's age, make, and model, a typical tune-up generally includes the following parts:

• Replacement of Spark Plugs:

• Spark Plugs: Essential for igniting the air-fuel mixture in the engine. Worn or faulty spark plugs can lead to misfires, rough idling, and decreased fuel efficiency.

• Inspection and Replacement of Ignition parts:

• Ignition Wires/Coils: These carry the electrical current from the ignition system to the spark plugs. Over time, they can wear out and cause misfires.
• Distributor Cap and Rotor: These components distribute the electricity to the correct spark plug at the correct time. They are often changed during a tune-up if the vehicle is older.

• Fuel System Inspection:
• Fuel Filter Replacement: The fuel filter prevents contaminants from entering the fuel injectors. A clogged filter can lead to poor engine performance.
• Fuel Injector Cleaning: Ensures the injectors are delivering the proper amount of fuel into the engine's cylinders.
• Air Filter Replacement: The air filter prevents dirt and debris from entering the engine. A clogged air filter can reduce performance and fuel efficiency.
• PCV Valve Inspection/Replacement: The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve helps regulate the pressure in the engine. A faulty PCV valve can cause engine performance issues and increase oil consumption.
• Inspect and Top Off Fluids:
• Engine Oil and Filter: Regular oil changes are crucial, but during a tune-up, the oil and oil filter are also inspected and changed if needed.
• Coolant: Ensures the engine operates at the correct temperature.
• Brake Fluid, Transmission Fluid, and Power Steering Fluid: These fluids are inspected and topped off or changed as compulsory.
• Battery Check:
• Battery Terminals and Cables: Clean and check for corrosion or wear.
• Battery Condition: The battery's overall health is inspected to ensure it holds a charge correctly.
• Timing and Idle Speed Adjustments (if applicable): On older vehicles, the engine's timing and idle speed might be adjusted to ensure optimal performance.
• Exhaust System Check: Inspect for leaks or damage in the exhaust system, which can affect engine performance and emissions.
• Visual Inspection: A general inspection of belts, hoses, and other parts to identify wear or potential problems that might need addressing.
• Diagnostic Check: Running a diagnostic inspection to identify any trouble codes or problems that might not be visible during a manual inspection.

What Are the Signs Your Car Needs a Tune Up?

For older vehicles with non-electric ignition systems, it was easier to know when it was time for a car tune up. The recommended interval for replacing spark plugs, fluids, and filters was pretty normal, about every 10,000 to 12,000 miles.  Newer vehicles are equipped with electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems are scheduled to go from 25,000 miles to as many as 100,000 miles without needing a major tune-up. This test can detect internal issues that may be connected with the transmission and engine, oil and gas tanks, exhaust system, and other operating systems. 

So what are the signs your car needs a tune up?  If your vehicle doesn’t seem to be performing like you think it should schedule a car diagnostic service.  When your vehicle is getting close to the time that a tune up is needed, you may start to notice the most common issues listed below:

• The check engine light illuminates your dashboard while driving. 
• The engine idles rough, or stalls when you try to accelerate or braking.
• Decrease in fuel economy, meaning you’re filling up the tank more often.
• Noticing shifting issues, such as slipping gears, jerking, or hard to put into gear.
• Feel more vibrations than usual in the steering wheel or in the seat.
